Did You Know
It's amazing to hear information like what I've heard from the diff versions of the shift happens videos.the rate that technology has grown and continues to grow at is beyond ridiculous... In months, weeks, days, and even minutes it's advancing a billion times faster than anything else in the world! The information that we can obtain In just minutes from millions of sources makes writing a research paper easier for us, compared to when students had to find everything through texts(and that was only past information not real time up to date info). Thank God for the Internet search engines! With social networking growing as fast it is it's almost impossible in 2011 to not know how to access the internet to get connected to one of the networks it's being used for everything entertainment (YouTube, Netflix), communication (Facebook, myspace, twitter), research (google,bing,ask,yahoo)....
I watched a couple of the shift happens videos and in the one posted by WingedAngel9 "shift happens original" they had said to ask the school board the question, "what are u doing to prepare my child to be successful in the 21st century society" which revolves around information technology..... That's something to think about because as the technology grows so should we but not by learning it ourselves(which is not a bad way) but it should also be something that is taught and aplied in the k-12 classrooms... Besides it's a part of every day life.
For example with the technology in the our phones today I just used my iPhone4 to watch a couple of the shift happens videos and the write this response after...think back to when you got your first cell phone it didn't do half as much as they do now, even cell phones 4 years ago couldnt do what they are caple of doing now and 5 years from now these will not be half as useful as the newer generation of phones. Mind blowing!
World is Flat (thoughts)
This was a great assignment as a student I learned a lot from it. The graphic organizer was a huge help for me if I was not looking for the certain facts in the video I would have looked over or thought nothing of them, also the notes I wrote on my organizer help me recall information in class when we discussed each topic. I would have a lot of use for this in the classroom especially in a high school setting for the two subjects I'm thinking about teaching (Math & Science). An example for math I can think of is have the students find a video on the internet that teaches them how to do a certain type of math problem, this would be used before i teach the lesson could give them somewhat prior knowledge, or new ways other than the way I teach them to solve the problem. As for science I could have them watch a video that explains something related to the next lesson or current and take notes. I'd use the same format as the assignment we did in class with the graphic organizer and discussion of the notes. You can look at every aspect of the assignment as teaching and learning, students learn how to analyze information and figure out whats important (note taking & listening skills). This can also be use to give information before or after a lesson therefore you are teaching. The biggest skill to be taught and learned is how to obtain information over the internet even though most students will probably already know how! The only difficulty I can see coming with this is if a student cant access the internet.........
